Affiliate Marketing

Let me share some very good information on Affiliate Marketing that’s available online:

In my opinion, one of the best ways for small business online entrepreneurs to get started with Affiliate Marketing is to have a third-party run the technical behind-the-scenes portion of your affiliate program, AND again, in my opinion, the ONLY third party Affiliate Networks to consider using for this task are Commission Junction or LinkShare, particularly if you’re launching your first Affiliate Program.

Another key point – think of your Affiliate Marketing Program just as you would one of your key products or services. Why? Because for an Affiliate Program to be successful, it must first be “sold” to affiliates and then managed as if it were a key product or service.

For an example of how the individual company Affiliate Marketing programs work, go to my Recommended Reading page and click on any of the book selections. All of them are linked to Amazon.com via their Associates Program (I’m a member). If you were to buy any of these books from Amazon via one of these links from my site, I would receive a 15% commission on that sale. (The commission rate ranges from 5% to 15%, depending on how specific each link to an Amazon product is from the Associates’ site.)

Finally, here’s a book about Affiliate Marketing I read several years ago – it’s still a great primer (that’s why it’s on my recommended reading list): Affiliate Selling: Building Revenue on the Web by Greg Helmstetter and Pamela Metivier.

I think these resources will get you off to a good start understanding the basic concept of Affiliate Marketing and how to join either an individual company’s Affiliate Program and/or an Affiliate Network.
