Here we go! Microsoft has officially launched its proprietary crawler-based search engine – click on the link below to take it for a test drive.

In particular, check out a unique feature of this search engine – the tie-in to Microsoft’s Encarta Online Encyclopedia. Enter the search phrase “population rome italy” (without the quotation marks). Look for the “Answer” entry right after the top 3 sponsored links – you get the exact answer you’re looking for fed to the search engine from the Encarta Online Encyclopedia. Pretty neat!

Google’s release of its new Desktop Search service made an already hot topic in the search community even hotter! What is Desktop Search? Ever try finding that KEY Word document, Excel spreadsheet, or Powerpoint presentation on YOUR own hard drive, and come up empty?! Who hasn’t?! How about trying to search for a specific email by using a single name or phrase? Impossible? Not any more!

Categorized Search goes by several different names – categorized search and clustered search are the most popular – and has been around for several years. The reason I’m including it as a recent search trend is that the second/third generations of this type of search engine have recently been introduced and are starting to create some buzz in the search community. The more important reason to keep an eye on categorized search is that IT IS A VERY GOOD CONCEPT.
