If you recall, about 6 months ago, I decided to take my latest WordPress skill set (the Divi Drag and Drop Theme WordPress Page Builder) to the next level by volunteering with a non-profit to be their WordPress Website Manager. (Here’s a link to my original post back in May: “How to Get WordPress Website Mgr. Experience”)
Also in that post, I promised to provide feedback on how this worked out for both the non-profit and me. Here goes!
The name of the non-profit I partnered with back in April is TIHAN (Tucson Interfaith HIV/AIDS Network) based in Tucson, Arizona. Who, what is TIHAN?
“TIHAN serves a diverse population of people living with HIV — women, people of color, members of the LGBT community, those from all walks of life and backgrounds. Although medications are helping to keep people with HIV alive longer than ever, there are still thousands of people in Pima County (Tucson, AZ) with HIV, and TIHAN serves to help them live well.”
TIHAN was looking for a volunteer with my WordPress/Divi skill set to help manage their brand new Divi themed WordPress Web site so they posted that position on Volunteer Match. I found TIHAN by searching on Volunteer Match for an organization with the keywords “wordpress” and “divi”, and because of the nature of this job, I also set the search to include “remote” locations.
It turned out that it was a match made in Heaven! I spend 10-15 hours a month managing the Web site by revising existing WordPress/Divi Web site content and adding new content like the monthly TIHAN E-newsletter. And I’m increasing the effectiveness of the site by adding capabilities like on-page SEO via the YOAST WordPress Plugin (see more below).
So what does managing a WordPress (Divi themed) Web site have to do with Digital/Online Marketing? Thought you’d never ask!
I am a firm believer that using a CMS like WordPress on a relatively small Web site typically managed by the site owner is the perfect entree into understanding some of the underlying technology used to run a WordPress CMS Web site. And that it turn helps make that owner a more skilled Digital/Online Marketer. How?
Here’s one example: A very easy and painless way for a WordPress-based Web site owner to get involved with Search Engine Optimization (SEO) of that Web site is to install the YOAST WordPress plugin. Even the free version is an excellent starting point for site owners to gain SEO experience by learning what’s important in on-page SEO by doing those activities on their site and seeing the result of their efforts as graded by the built-in YOAST SEO algorithm.
Not using WordPress or another CMS to “run” your Web site? Think again!
